Places to visit

MONSANTO

This historic village encloses the ancient Lusitanian settlement of Serra de Penha Garcia, the 12th-century castle and beautiful manor-houses (18th century), the mother-church and Misericórdia Church (16th century).

From the castle you have a nice view over the landscape. Nearby stands the Roman-Visigothic chapel of S. Pedro-de-Vir-a-Corça.

Monsanto is about 25 km away from Monfortinho. There are vestiges of human presence since the Stone Age - Palaeolithic period and also from ancient Roman thermal springs.

These lands were conquered by the king D. Afonso Henriques, in 1165, and donated to the Order of the Templários. They built the castle, under the orders of D. Gualdim Pais. In 1190, king D. Sancho I order to reconstruct the castle that, during the fights with Leon - Spain, had been destroyed.

To visit: Chapel of S. Miguel (13th century), Chapel of Santiago, Chapel of Santa Maria do Castelo, Chapel of Santo António, Chapel of the Espírito Santo, Church of Misericordia and the Church of S. Salvador.

Nearby the Church of Misericordia, may be appreciated the Tower of the Clock or Tower of Lucano (14th century), where you can see a replica of the Rooster of Silver (trophy attributed to Monsanto because won the title of « the village more portuguese from Portugal » in a contest promoted in 1938).

Monsanto is expecting your visit for more than eight hundred years...
